Your Brain on Apps

Over the last 3 years, we’ve organized 16 App Shows, promoting 150 different mobile apps. We’ve never done a show like this.  At the next AppShow, March 14th, we’ll talk apps but with one of the big thinkers about technology, Pulitzer-Prize winning New York Times technology reporter Matt Richtel. We’re going to discuss some interesting, important questions:

-How does heavy of use of apps and other technology impact our brains?

-How is the always-connected nature of smartphones affecting interpersonal etiquette and relationships?

-In what ways are mobile apps making us more and less productive?

-Are we addicted to our mobile devices and what happens when we’re without them?

-Have we forgotten how to do important things like memorize a number or give directions to someone who’s in an unfamiliar location?

Maybe we’ll get Matt to talk about just what makes great apps work. What makes them so seductive? Is that a good thing?

For those of you who do not know Matt’s work, in 2010 he won the Pulitzer Prize for Journalism for his New York Times series entitled “Driven to Distraction”  which lead to widespread efforts to curb distracted driving.  He is a leading expert on how heavy technology use impacts behavior and the brain and has also explored these subjects in three thrillers published by Harper Collins.   In addition to our discussion about “Your Brain on Apps,”  Matt will read from his critically-acclaimed new high-tech thriller, The Cloud.  So come, meet Matt, think apps, and enjoy what I hope will be one of our great shows.
